Last day in Kauai and our recommendations

Since our flight didn’t depart until 6:30pm, we enjoyed a leisurely morning in our condo, savored the ocean view one last time, and then headed to Lihue. We stopped at the Kauai Community Market and enjoyed some fresh coconut water before heading to Costco to pick up some souvenirs of Koloa rum and a big bag of single estate Kauai coffee. Note that if you vacation in Kauai, get any food-related souvenirs at Costco or Safeway and you will save on the tourist up-charge. It started to rain so we decided to watch an afternoon matinee at the local movie theater (we saw Deadpool, which was entertaining).

We still had about one hour before returning the rental car so we stopped in at the Kauai Beer Company for some pretzels, habanero-pork mac and cheese, Lihue Lager on nitro, and some tropical Kombucha on tap. It was a great last stop before the airport.

This has really been an amazing trip – definitely in our number one spot right now, with our Belize honeymoon in close second. The island life is contagious – I could totally see Kauai being our go-to tropical getaway in the future. Everything is easy, relaxing, beautiful, and the food is amazing. Plus, there’s so much to do – you get the best of a tropical outdoor paradise with amazing beaches and snorkeling. So, if you are now convinced on planning a trip to Kauai after reading this blog, here’s our list of must-do’s (but seriously, everything we did was awesome):

Best Mai Tai: Fresh pressed sugar cane Mai Tais at the Mahiko Lounge (catch happy hour there!)

Best relaxing beach: Ke’e beach

Best pricey activity: Helicopter tour

Best budget-friendly activity: hiking (anywhere is beautiful here and we barely scratched the surface)

Best food/sushi/poke: Sushi Girl Kauai

Other tips:

  • The Jeep was worth it – there are some parking lots that are not paved and quite rocky – we saw quite a few rental cars scrape or get damaged
  • We were really happy to stay in the middle of the island (near Kapa’a) – although we spent a lot of time on the north shore, the centralized location of our condo made a shorter drive to many parts of the island
  • Things I wish we could have done: Snorkeling at Tunnels beach and Anini beach (turtles and seahorses near the boat ramp) – this is probably only possible in the summer or a very calm winter day

That’s it for now. Thanks for sharing in our adventure!
